Exam Structure

JEE Main 2026 follows the same three-section format as previous years — Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics — with a mix of MCQs and numerical value questions.

Section-wise breakdown

Each subject carries 100 marks, split as:

  • 20 MCQs worth 4 marks each
  • 10 numerical value questions, of which you attempt any 5, also worth 4 marks each

Marking scheme

  • +4 for every correct answer
  • -1 for every incorrect MCQ
  • No negative marking on numerical value questions

Numerical questions are where most students leave free marks on the table. Since there's no penalty for a wrong guess, always attempt every numerical question even if you're unsure — a partially-reasoned guess beats a blank.

Our recommendation

Spend the first 10 minutes of the exam triaging: mark every question you're fully confident about first, then come back for numericals, and save genuinely unfamiliar MCQs for last. Speed comes from not re-reading questions you've already decided to skip.
